SOU softball team steals a pair from Patten OAKLAND, Calif. Going to California has been kind to the Southern Oregon softball team. The Raiders improved to 5-1 on their Bay Area road trip with a doubleheader sweep of Patten on Wednesday. Wins of 9-0 and 12-0 pushed SOU to 6-2 overall. In the first game, junior pitcher Brandi Brown hurled a three-hitter to run her record to 5-2. Brown struck out six while walking none, and just five Patten batters reached base the entire game. Freshman second baseman Haley Varley continued her hot hitting with two hits and an RBI in five at-bats. Varley, a 2001 graduate of North Medford High who is pacing the Raiders in batting average, also stole two bases. Junior shortstop Latisha Inget and freshman outfielder Kirby MacKay contributed two RBIs apiece for SOU. Brown also started Game 2 for the Raiders, and she combined with Seanna Doyel on a no-hitter. Brown walked one in her four innings, and the only two other Patten batters to reach base benefited from SOU errors. Brown got the victory to go to 6-2. Offensively, junior third baseman Angie Chaplin and sophomore first baseman Lisa Aitchison led the Raiders charge. Chaplin was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while Aitchison went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
