PREP HOOPS: No. 4 Panthers blast Warriors By Mail Tribune staff Dec 21, 2022 09:36 PM A A Fourth-ranked South Medford was able to get out in transition and shared the ball extremely well overall to race past Cleveland for a 75-30 girls basketball victory Wednesday afternoon. Senior guard Donovyn Hunter paced the starting group with 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals while Kendall Fealey had nine points for the Panthers (8-1) as head coach Tom Cole spread the minutes out throughout the roster. With those balanced minutes, freshman reserves Taylor Young (17 points) and Dyllyn Howell (13 points) were able to capitalize against Cleveland (2-4). “It’s a great group of young ladies that have fun playing together and are still learning how to play together,” said Cole. South Medford built a comfortable lead before Cleveland was able to convert some shots and draw closer at 22-14 through a first quarter that was played in a fast back-and-forth fashion. The Panthers erased all doubt of the final outcome in the second quarter, limiting the Warriors to two points to go up 37-16 at the break. The score might have been even more out of hand but South, despite making nice cuts to the basket and following with good passes, had a host of good looks just roll off the rim. “This team is definitely one of the most unselfish teams I’ve had,” said Cole. “Sometimes maybe too unselfish, but they really play for one another. It is not a ball-dominant team. When Donovyn Hunter is as content with giving assists and your best player is playing for everybody, it really lifts the culture and you see our upperclassmen really cheering and championing our younger kids and trying to build confidence.” Sara Schmerbach added eight points and four rebounds, Tatum Schmerbach pulled down eight boards and Kim Ceron blocked four shots to help contribute to the balanced effort. Boys SUNSET 61, NORTH MEDFORD 53: At Lake Oswego, North Medford had some costly missed shots from the field and the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to leave the door open for Sunset, which broke a 41-all tie in the fourth behind a 20-12 run built on 18 points by Kayin Turner in the consolation final of the Lakeridge Tournament. Houston Klug scored 16 points and Nolan Kelly added 11 for the Black Tornado (1-7). Sunset’s Jett Birdsall connected on half-court shot at the buzzer to end the first half and draw the Apollos (4-5) to within 34-33 at the break.
