Staver erupts for six goals in St. Mary�s win KLAMATH FALLS � Senior Brian Staver scored six goals, three in each half, to lead the St. Mary�s boys to a 9-2 District 6 victory over Mazama on Tuesday. Staver also had an assist. "Staver was all over the field," said St. Mary�s coach Joel Benson. "He was in the midfield and helping up front. He seemed to be everywhere." The Vikings grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the match, then allowed five unanswered goals. Mazama�s Dan Oldham tied the game when he knocked the ball into his own goal in the fifth minute. The Crusaders, 4-3 in District 6, pressured Mazama with 29 shots on goal. Junior Mike Sanchez had both goals for Mazama, which remains winless in District 6. St. Mary�s plays host to Henley in a match with playoff implications next Tuesday. PHOENIX 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 � At Talent, freshman John Feeney scored twice and junior John Hendricks had two assists and a goal in leading Phoenix to the District 6 win. Feney scored his goals from close range in the 12th and 14th minutes, while Hendricks scored his 22nd goal of the season nine minutes into the second half off a pass from David Peterson. Phoenix (10-1, 6-0 Dist. 6) held Illinois Valley to no shots on goal as goalkeeper Anthony Machado posted his seventh shutout. Phoenix has allowed only five goals this season while scoring 49 in 11 games. HIDDEN VALLEY 8, BONANZA 1 � At Bonanza, Matt Johnson and Evan Cope each scored three goals to lead Hidden Valley to an easy District 6 win. Johnson started things off for the Mustangs with a goal in the seventh minute but Bonanza came back to even things up just three minutes later. Johnson once again gave Hidden Valley the lead, this time for good, in the 28th minute and Cope notched his first goal of the contest with five minutes left in the half. Irie Spann and Lumspen also added goals as the Mustangs, who overwhelmed Bonanza with 43 shots on goal, improved to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. Girls Soccer PHOENIX 5, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 � At Cave Junction, Helen Shorland broke open a 2-0 halftime lead by notching a hat trick in the second half as the Pirates rolled past the Cougars. Shorland scored three goals in a pan of six minutes, with assists going to Larrisa Wiltrout, Chelsi Clark and Sarah Kieffer. Phoenix (5-5-1, 3-2 Dist. 6) jumped on the scoreboard first in the 20th minute when Clark re-directed an Amber Fry corner kick with a pinpoint header past the Illinois Valley goalkeeper. Annie Kulig added another goal one minute later when she gained control of a loose ball and deposited it into the net. Acacia Lacy and Kat Cox shared the shutout in goal for Phoenix, with Lacy making four saves in the first 60 minutes of action before being sidelined after banging knees with a Cougar player. The Pirates outshot Illinois Valley 40-7. HIDDEN VALLEY 7, ROGUE RIVER 0 � At Rogue River, Shea Ford and Amber Jones each tallied two goals as Hidden Valley won a non-league battle under the lights at Rogue River. Ford scored unassisted goals in the 5th and 13th minutes, with Gina Anderson scoring a goal off a corner kick by Kim Hill and Hill adding an unassisted goal to give the Mustangs a 4-0 halftime lead. Jones took over the scoring in the second half with an unassisted goal in the 47th minute and a goal off a Fay Jaramillo throw-in in the 70th minute. Ashley Elledge capped the scoring off an assist by Ford in the 79th minute. Sheena Gannon posted her third shutout in goal for Hidden Valley (8-2, 2-2 Dist. 6), which plays its league tilt with Rogue River (2-6-1, 0-4) on Saturday.
