Browne, North boys start strong WILSONVILLE - Adam Browne put himself in a favorable position after the first of two days at the Class 4A boys state golf championship Monday at Langdon Farms Golf Club. The North Medford sophomore is in fourth place and the Black Tornado also stands fourth in the team standings after the first round on the par-71 layout. Browne, the Southern Oregon Conference district runner-up, fired a 74 to trail opening-day leader Dustin Andres of Tualatin by four strokes. "He's (Browne) in good position to play aggressive golf (today)," North Medford coach Kevin Klabunde said. "What you want on the first day is not to shoot yourself out of it." Browne played the back nine first and made the turn with a 1-over 37. But he hit his tee shot on the course's No. 1 hole - his 10th - out of bounds and settled for a triple bogey. Browne regrouped to post a 37 on the par-36 opening nine. "He hit a lot of greens and played pretty solid," said Klabunde, who had to work as a tournament official the first day and didn't see much of Browne's round. "He was fairly pleased overall, but disappointed about that one hole." Andres, a freshman, has a two-stroke lead over Chad Cocco of Bend. Robert Fisher of Canby recorded a 73 for third. Tualatin leads the field with a team stroke total of 305. North Medford is eight shots back at 313. Canby stands second (310) and Jesuit is in third (311). North holds a two-stroke lead over Lakeridge (315) and Bend and David Douglas are at 319. SOC regular-season champion South Medford, however, struggled in its opening day. The Panthers posted a 339 total, putting them 17th out of 18 teams. The Black Tornado received a respectable effort from senior Chris Daggitt, who carded a 77, good for a 12th-place tie. North Medford freshman Mike Barry, the district tournament winner, shot the third-best round on the team with an 80. Barry is in a 12-way tie for 33rd. Barry was just 1-over at the turn and parred his first hole on the second nine. But eight straight bogeys followed. Daggitt played as well as he has all season except around the greens, according to Klabunde. Daggitt three-putted five greens. "I still feel we have not had that round we're looking for where everyone is firing on all cylinders," said Klabunde. "My top three are capable of shooting par." South's top scores were a pair of 83s turned in by freshman Brodie Sullivan and senior Noah Horstman. Roseburg had two individuals qualify for state. Sophomore Tyler Robinson carded a 78, while junior Ryan Malone is at 84. NORTH MEDFORD (313) - Adam Browne 74, Chris Daggitt 77, Mike Barry 80, Brandon Miller 82. SOUTH MEDFORD (339) - Noah Horstman 83, Brodie Sullivan 83, Ryan Ulbricht 85, Alan Johnson 85. CLASS 4A GIRLS - At Corvallis, Ashland freshman Stephanie Johns is in a three-way tie for 12th with an opening-round 82, but the Grizzlies are far off the pace after the first day at Trysting Tree Golf Club. Amy Mombert of Bend turned in the low score of 74 and the Lava Bears have three players in the top seven to take a comfortable 14-stroke lead over second-place Lakeridge (333). Sam Barlow is third (336). Three players - Summer Smith of North Salem, Molly Edmunds of Glencoe and Cassie Castleman of Lincoln - are tied for second with a 75. North Medford's only golfer to qualify for state, Kacie Kinney, posted an opening-round 87. The freshman is in a three-way tie for 28th. Roseburg, the SOC regular season and district tournament champion, is ninth with a 371 team total. Roseburg's top round was turned in by senior Heather Warner with an 81. Ashland is 16th in the 18-team field with a 397. ROSEBURG (371) - Heather Warner 81, Jennifer Gaston 90, Melissa Card 93, Kelly O'Brien 107. ASHLAND (397) - Stephanie Johns 82, Bianca Montagnino 90, Kelly Thompson 103, Emiko Kimura 122. CLASS 3A BOYS - At Redmond, North Valley junior Sam Kane grabbed the first day lead with low-round of 76 at the Eagle Crest resort course. Kane holds a one-stroke lead over Trever Phillips of Tillamook, Jack Sackos of Baker and Ryan Berning of Wilsonville. A pair of Hidden Valley players - Jered Delay and Sol Torrel - are in a three-way tie for fifth at 78. Tillamook holds the first-day lead with a 321, but four other teams are within nine strokes of the Cheesemakers. Baker is second (321) and Sisters is third (327). Skyline Conference representatives Hidden Valley (344) and Henley (371) are well off the pace. Hidden Valley rests in eighth place and Henley is 14th in the 16-team field. HIDDEN VALLEY (344) - Jered Delay 78, Sol Torrel 78, Billy Muir 86, Andrew Parks 102. HENLEY (371) - Jeremy Voehl 86, Jason Cantrell 92, Marcus McDonald 106, Derek Hunter 108. CLASS 2A-1A BOYS - At Monroe, Nic Caplan had a roller-coaster round that included a hole-in-one and three double bogeys, and when the dust cleared the St. Mary's High golfer found himself in a tie for first place at the boys 2A-1A state golf tournament. Caplan posted a 4-under-par 76 and is tied with Santiam Christian's Jeff Nigro after the opening round of play. Santiam Christian leads the team scoring with 327 strokes, followed by Blanchet with 331, Vernonia with 335 and Enterprise with 343. St. Mary's rests in last-place in the eight-team tournament with a 372. Santiam Christian's Ben Sisler is tied for third place in the individual standings with Enterprise's Kyle Crawford. Each golfer shot a 79. Caplan used a 9-iron to ace the 160-yard, par-3 13th hole. "It was pretty pure," St. Mary's coach Mike Rust said of the hole-in-one. "It bounced a couple feet in front of the hole and rolled straight in." Caplan had nine-hole scores of 40 and 36. ST. MARY'S (372) - Nic Caplan 76, Mike Rust 91, Kole Thiriot 102, James Yaru 103. CLASS 3A-2A-1A GIRLS - At Redmond, Marist built a commanding 14-stroke lead over Molalla and a 41-shot lead over third-place Phoenix after the first round of play at the girls 3A-2A-1A state golf tournament at Eagle Ridge. Ontario's Anna Jaramillo shot a 77 to pace the individual scoring. Sophomore Caroline Keating led the way for Phoenix with an 85 and found herself in a tie for 11th. St. Mary's posted a team total of 387 on the first day, led by Jodi Luce's 86. PHOENIX (378) - Caroline Keating 85, Miranda Akerman 95, Amber George 96, Maddie Holcomb 102. ST.
