SOC teams have solid showing at Bend volleyball tournament BEND - Southern Oregon Conference volleyball teams made a good showing at the Clearwater Classic Saturday held at Bend and Mountain View high schools. North Medford and Ashland advanced into the quarterfinals of the 16-team tournament, while Roseburg lost in the semifinals to eventual winner Gresham. Top-ranked and undefeated Gresham defeated No. 2 Barlow in the finals, 15-9, 15-9. North Medford turned in its best performance with a 15-10, 16-14 victory over No. 9 Sheldon in the opening round of the single-elimination bracket playoffs. "It was the first time we've beaten a top-10 team this season," North Medford coach Ron Beick said. "Our serve-receive was a primary factor. That's where we've struggled in the past against some of the top teams." In the second game, North led Sheldon 13-10, then the Irish rallied for a 14-13 lead. An Amy Bakker kill got the Black Tornado a sideout and North closed out the match on its next rotation. Senior middle Chaley Higgins led North at the net with 10 kills, while Bakker and Stacey Casebier added seven each. "Our middle attack with Chaley Higgins primarily kept them off balance and opened things up for the rest of the team," said Beick. In the quarterfinals, Gresham defeated North Medford, 15-6, 15-4. In the first game against Gresham, the score was tied at 6-all. "Our serve-receive broke down and it made it tough to run a balanced offense," said Beick. "They're extremely quick. We played them better than we did three weeks ago in the Rogue Valley Classic." In pool play, North lost two games each to Barlow and No. 7 Jesuit and defeated St. Mary's of Portland, 15-3, 15-8. "Overall I was pleased, especially how we ended the day," said Beick. "The best thing for us was we played top 10-teams, other than St. Mary's, all day. It makes us play our positions better and play smarter. That can only benefit us." Ashland split with Central Catholic and defeated Mountain View and Wilson in pool action. In the first round of bracket play, the Grizzlies dispatched South Albany, then were eliminated by Barlow, 15-13, 15-3. Roseburg defeated Mountain View, 4-15, 15-3, 15-8 in the initial round of the playoffs. In the quarterfinals, the Indians got past West Linn, 15-12, 15-10, then lost to Gresham, 15-3, 15-4. DAYS CREEK TOURNAMENT - At Days Creek, Butte Falls advanced to the championship finals before falling short to the host team, 15-6, 15-11, in the eight-team tournament. Sophomore Asia Million paced the Loggers in the tourney, notching team-highs in kills (24), digs (24) and aces (12). Junior Krystle Rowley added 30 assists overall, while Sarah Matthews led the Loggers in blocks with six. Butte Falls (11-6 overall) swept Canyonville Christian Academy in two games and split with Glendale and Umpqua Valley Christian in pool play to earn the No. 1 seed. The Loggers edged Roseburg's JV squad, rated No. 2 out of the opposite bracket, 15-13, 15-12, to advance to the championship finals against Days Creek. Cross Country LAVA BEAR CLASSIC - At Bend, Klamath Union's top-4 runners more than held their own against the No. 2-ranked boys team in the nation but the fifth scoring spot proved pivotal as Mead High of Washington ran away with the boys team title. Lauren Jespersen was the individual winner at 15:23.2, while teammate Jacob Gomez placed third (15:36.7) for the Pelicans. Kevin Pellegrine finished 11th at 16:09.4 and Alex Jayne 13th at 16:14.4 for KU, but Markus Schaaf could manage only a 76th-best outing (17:59.6) as the Pelicans placed third overall with 104 points. Mead High had runners place fourth, seventh, eighth, 19th and 26th to easily win the boys title over Joel E. Ferris High, 64 to 84. Paced by Shaun Olson's 17th-place finish (16:26.2) and a lifetime best mark of 16:30.7 for Chris McLean to put him 22nd, South Medford finished ninth in the boys standings. Grants Pass finished 12th.
