Letters, Aug. 7 By Ashland Tidings readers Aug 07, 2020 12:00 AM A A Don’t listen to naysayers The Jackson County commissioners say Gov. Kate Brown’s guidelines are too strict and Jackson County cannot meet them even for K-3 opening. I ask the commissioners to remember back a few weeks when the CDC issued guidelines for reopening businesses President Trump said they were too strict and the CDC backed down and issued more lenient guidelines. We can see the results. Infection rates and deaths from COVID-19 have shot up. Even rural areas that had been largely spared are now seeing alarming rises of infection. Governor Brown, listen to the scientists and medical experts. Do not be swayed by naysayers. County commissioners, are you doing everything possible to lessen the spread of COVID-19? Are you following the three Ws and demanding that everyone around you do the same? Teachers, students and parents all want schools to reopen but only if it is safe to do so. We humans can slow the spread of the deadly virus if we have the will. Remember the three Ws — Wear a face covering, Watch your distance, Wash your hands. Edith Montgomery Ashland A Trump analysis To help understand what the Trump presidency represents I offer the following: Racism to the point of white nationalism. War on immigrants and their families. Condoning Russian bounties on the lives of U.S. troops. Undermining free speech directed at him. Seeking a personal, inhumane. authoritarian dictatorship while sacrificing freedom and democracy. Suppressing the vote wherever possible to aid his re-election campaign. Undermining our election. Subverting our Constitution, our institutions and basic democratic principles to reward perceived friends and punish enemies. Promoting coronavirus sickness and death because it threatened blue states first; now his election campaign demands economic recovery. Inducing a record economic drop (33%) in GDP that targets low-income Americans more than wealthy friends. Basing policy on delusion and insane conspiracy hoaxes while simultaneously rejecting science, evidence and reality, especially medical and climate science. Sacrificing workers with tax policy that benefits only wealthy Americans. Destroying health care across the nation. A record of total incompetence, insanity and corruption. Because there is nothing conservative about the Trump family crime syndicate, conservatives abandoned the party and now campaign against him. Although he lacks empathy and humanity, still some voters swallow the 20,000 lies he’s told since inauguration and support his divisive presidency. Alan Journet Jacksonville Webletters Graphic.jpg
