North boys falter in soccer jamboree ROSEVILLE, Calif. � Defensive mistakes sent North Medford boys to a pair of loses Friday at the Del Campo High School Soccer Jamboree. The Black Tornado dropped a 3-2 decision to Ponderosa of Shingle Springs, Calif., then was blanked 3-0 by Granite Bay of Roseville. Teams played two, 25-minute halves in the jamboree. In its opening game, North fell behind 1-0 on a penalty kick by Ponderosa seven minutes into the game. Senior midfielder Scott Jolly knotted the score for the Black Tornado on a free kick from 30 yards. Ponderosa went ahead again after the North defense failed the clear the ball and left freshman goalie David Oliver one-on-one with a Bruin attacker. Ben Berringer won a scramble in front of the Bruins� net and converted for North to tie the game 2-2 four minutes into the second half. Ponderosa scored what proved to be the winning goal about midway through the second half on a 20-yard shot that was placed just below the crossbar. Granite Bay grabbed a 3-0 halftime lead against North Medford in its second game. "We just made mental mistakes, things we can improve on," North Medford coach Rich Garcia said. "The two teams we played were good teams, comparable to any of the strong SOC teams." The Black Tornado will play two more games in the jamboree today. HIDDEN VALLEY 3, McKINLEYVILLE 2 � At Murphy, Hidden Valley received goals from Evan Cope, Dylan Borta and Ben Downing and a strong goal-tending effort from junior Tim Vanderstoel, who recorded eight saves. Cope opened the scoring on a header off a crossing pass from Jon Morse 12 minutes into the game. Sophomore Borta registered his first varsity goal when he trapped a long punt from Vanderstoel and beat the McKinleyville goalie at the 36 minute mark. Hidden Valley upped its margin to 3-0 early in the second half when Irie Spann dribbled through several defenders and found Ben Downing, who coverted from 20 yards out. Hidden Valley had 28 shots to 12 for McKinleyville. Volleyball BUTTE FALLS 16-11-15, CAMAS VALLEY 14-15-12 � At Butte Falls, junior Jessica Dunlap served up 12 points, including the game-winner in the third and final match, to lead Butte Falls to a season-opening win. Dunlap rallied Butte Falls back from a 14-10 deficit in Game 1 with five straight service points and then closed out the match after five consecutive failed serve opportunities with Butte Falls clinging to a 14-12 lead in Game 3. She also had 14 assists while senior Elizabeth McLauchlan had four aces and was 13-of-37 on hitting. Sophomore Krystle Rowley added five digs for Butte Falls.
