SOU sweeps two in softball SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Proving proficient on the road, the Southern Oregon softball team swept Dominican, 3-0 and 5-4, on Monday. The Raiders (4-2 overall) started their road trip Sunday by splitting with Notre Dame (Calif.) in Belmont, Calif., losing 3-2 before winning 6-3. Coach James Gravelle professed satisfaction with SOU's performance Monday, when it rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the nightcap with a three-run sixth inning to complete the sweep. "We played our best back-to-back games since last year," Gravelle said. Junior pitcher Brandi Brown (4-2) picked up a pair of victories, hurling a four-hit shutout in the opener and relieving Shawna Doyle in Game 2. Freshman Haley Varley, a 2001 North Medford graduate, notched an RBI in Game 1 and went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases in the second game. Varley and Kirby McKay combined to spark the Raiders' comeback in the nightcap. After McKay drilled a two-RBI triple to tie the game at 4-all, Varley belted a single to score McKay for the game-winner.
