Mail Tribune 100, Oct. 10, 1922 By Alissa Corman Oct 10, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Oct. 10, 1922 PROMINENT LOCAL MEN ESTABLISH A NEW LUMBER MILL Having acquired timber holdings that will justify manufacturing operations for many years has resulted in the organization of the Talent Lumber company by several local men. The proposed sawmill and box factory, which will be erected at Talent in the near future, will have a daily capacity of approximately 30,000 feet. To Jackson County this gives another annual payroll amounting to about $160,000 with steady employment to many men. These factors mean much to the further development of this immediate vicinity. The advantages derived by Oregon from its lumbering are well known. The industry is thriving today to a remarkable degree, and as evidenced by the recent report of the West Coast Lumberman’s Association the volume of unfilled business and new orders, exceeds by far the cut of the mills. The demand for Oregon lumber in the eastern market has reached a point of being a large factor in the annual output of the mills and inasmuch as the southern pine is gradually being cut out, will mean that the eastern market will eventually look to the west coast for its entire lumber requirements. After spending two years making a survey of conditions and analyzing every angle of their new venture together with studying the reports of various experts, it was concluded that the opportune time had arrived to start operations. BOXING BOUT AT ELKS THURSDAY The members of the Elks lodge are in for a good time Thursday night when their big smoker followed by an extra feed, will be held immediately after the initiation of a large class of candidates at the regular session. A large crowd of Elks is expected. The main event of the smoker will be a six-round bout between Joe Walton and Battling Frick, two well-known 145-pound Medford boxers, who in their two previous meetings the past three months before the late lamented Medford Athletic club, sent the crowd crazy with delight by their clever and fast milling. Their first meeting resulted in a draw, and at the second meeting Frick was given the decision. There will be other entertainment also, including two fast preliminary bouts, and the Buckhounds will confer a degree on several candidates. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
