PREP ROUNDUP: Crater finishes 1-3 at Easter Classic By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Apr 13, 2022 09:11 PM A A FRESNO, Calif. — After getting off to a rousing start at the 52nd annual Easter Baseball Classic, Crater’s baseball team suffered its third straight loss to wrap up tournament play Wednesday with an 11-5 setback against Placer High of California. The early morning loss came on the heels of a late night defeat Tuesday at the hands of tournament host Fresno, 7-6, after the Comets posted all of their runs in a final-inning surge. “Our kids battled hard,” Crater coach Jay Campbell said of the Fresno affair. “They didn’t give in and didn’t give up in that situation (down 7-0 in the sixth). It would have been easy for us just to roll over and get in the vans but the kids battled hard and made it a game.” Fresno starter Paul Marshall carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Caleb Randolph broke through with a single for Crater (6-9). Marshall finished with 11 strikeouts in five complete innings. Facing different pitching in the sixth, the Comets came alive behind RBI efforts from Quay Lundeen, Kellen Rapp, Ryan Hill and Josiah Hearne before the comeback stalled. The game was called after six innings due to a time limit. Against Placer, Hearne had an RBI double during a three-run fifth inning that trimmed Crater’s deficit to 9-4 after the California club had used a six-run third inning to gain a comfortable lead. “They just smashed the ball,” said Campbell of Placer, which had five of its 11 hits in that third inning. Hayden Kindreich and Kayden Gardner also drove in runs in the fifth, with Randolph finishing 2-for-3 with one RBI.
