BOYS HOOPS: Challengers fall to Philomath in OT By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Dec 17, 2022 08:39 PM A A COOS BAY — Cascade Christian was able to rally and force an overtime session during Saturday’s championship game at the Les Schwab South Coast Tournament but the Challengers couldn’t quite seal the comeback bid in a 47-44 loss to Philomath at Marshfield High School. “It was a good game and we’re going to learn from it,” said Cascade Christian head coach Brian Morse. “There’s a lot of things that we can go forward with from that, especially defensively. It was a fun, physical game and I was proud of the guys for fighting back.” Cascade Christian, ranked No. 1 at the Class 3A level, trailed 37-30 heading to the fourth quarter but got a key runner from Colsen Brown to tie it at 39-all and later a steal and transition layup by Drew Hall made it 41-all with about one minute to play. Philomath, ranked No. 2 in 4A, then held the ball for the rest of regulation and missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. In overtime, Hall had a couple good chances to put the Challengers ahead, missing in the paint and then later twice from the foul line and the deliberate Warriors were finally able to break a scoreless drought with an inside basket by Chad Russell after another lengthy possession. Triston Wallace’s driving effort to tie then missed the mark and, after a pair of Cole Beardsley free throws, Cascade’s Austin Maurer couldn’t connect on a 3-pointer and Philomath (7-0) again got the rebound and converted two more foul shots to make it 47-41. “Something just needed to fall, whether it was a free throw or grabbing a big rebound or whatever, but offensively we definitely struggled there at the end,” said Morse. “Part of that is because you take up so much energy when playing defense on that long of a possession, and Philomath had it for two or three minutes at one point. It was a great defensive effort on our part.” Hall was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all three shots to close the gap with two seconds to play, but the Challengers (2-1) were unable to prevent a game-ending inbounds pass. Maurer finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks and Hall had nine points and four steals. Both were named to the all-tournament team. Brown added nine points off the bench for Cascade, which knocked down all five of its 3-pointers in a hotly-contested opening quarter but failed to connect from beyond the arc thereafter. Philomath, which led 31-24 at halftime, saw Preston Kramer and Beardsley each finish with 13 points. “I was proud of how hard they worked,” added Morse of his crew. “Hopefully that’s going to keep them hungry and get us ready for the Christmas Classic next Wednesday.” PHILOMATH (47): Bushnell 0, Muir 0, Kramer 13, May 9, Peters 6, Beardsley 13, Russell 6.
