Patrol officers handed out the tickets during a two-hour "targeted pedestrian enforcement" operation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A total of 61 citations were issued, with six drivers ticketed for passing a stopped vehicle at a crosswalk. Eleven motorists received citations for other traffic offenses, Medford police officer Gail Schweitzer said. Last month, Medford police conducted a similar two-hour enforcement operation at a crosswalk in the 400 block of West Main Street. A total of 31 drivers were cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian. Schweitzer said pedestrian-enforcement operations are designed to raise awareness of safety issues and reduce the number of automobile/pedestrian accidents. The city’s program is working, Schweitzer said. She noted that in 2003, there were about half as many accidents in Medford crosswalks than in 2002. State law requires drivers to stop and remain stopped while a pedestrian is walking in their lane of traffic or the adjacent lane.
