Tornado trumps Tribe twice The North Medford High track team took another leap forward Tuesday when the Black Tornado swept a dual meet from Roseburg at Bowerman Field. For the Tornado girls, it marked their first win over the Indians since the split of Medford High during the 1986-87 school year. Kerby Boschee broke a North Medford school record in the discus (113-2) and Emily Dunn did likewise in the long jump (16-7) to highlight the girls' 75-70 victory. Junior sprinter Thomas O'Brien, meanwhile, sped to a 10.9 clocking in the 100 meters and Nick Dunn ran a season-best time of 39.9 in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles to pace the Tornado boys to a 77-68 victory. "This was a big step forward for our program," North Medford first-year coach Mark Hodges said. "I knew we had a chance to win both meets and the kids went out and got the job done. We set a ton of personal bests." O'Brien has been sidelined much of the spring with a pulled hamstring and the flu bug, but the junior sprinter showcased his ability by blowing past Roseburg's Nick Pappas in the 100. One stopwatch clocked O'Brien in 10.81 and another in 10.82, but hand-held times are rounded up to the nearest one-tenth of a second. Thus, his official time was 10.9. "Thomas hasn't been able to practice much because of his injury and then the illness," Hodges said. "We're excited about his potential at district, if we can just keep him healthy." Even though Emily Dunn broke the girls' school record in the long jump, she had to take a back seat to Roseburg's Jennifer Lint, who soared an SOC-best 17-1 to win the event. SOUTH MEDFORD SWEEPS --At Eagle Point, Sarah Eyman sped to a school-record time in the 3,000 meters and Ethan Wallenberg produced the top long jump mark in Southern Oregon as South Medford swept Eagle Point in an SOC dual meet. Eyman covered 3,000 meters in 10:33.1 to break the school record previously held by Melissa Waggener, who was clocked in 10:36.6 in 1996. Wallenberg, meanwhile, leaped 20-6 in the long jump to surpass Jake Zeliff of Grants Pass for the top mark in Southern Oregon.
