RAIDER ROUNDUP: Fernandez, SOU men win titles By SOU Sports Information Updated: Nov 04, 2022 11:37 PM A A TALENT — The Cascade Conference men’s cross country crown is back in Southern Oregon’s possession after a vintage performance spurred by individual champion Isaac Fernandez on Friday at Colver Road Fields. The No. 11-ranked Raiders won the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank for the first time since 2017, the year they claimed their 10th title in a row, with an upset of No. 5 Eastern Oregon. Two months after EOU routed them with five of the top-six placers at the CCC Preview Meet, they accumulated 34 points to the Mountaineers’ 66. College of Idaho stole second place with 62. SOU’s Grier Gatlin, for the 10th time in his career, was voted the CCC Men’s Coach of the Year. Fernandez became the Raiders’ first individual champion since 2015, completing the soggy 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes 18.7 seconds and clearing runner-up Nick McMillen of Oregon Tech by 5 1/2 ticks. Micah Murphy of Northwest (Wash.) was on track to win the title, leading Fernandez and the rest of the field throughout the race, but took a wrong turn over the final 1,000 meters and was ultimately disqualified. The Raiders’ four other scorers were each among the top-13: third-place Jensen Salvatori (25:24.5), eighth-place Lincoln Woodhouse (25:31.5), ninth-place Logan Jones (25:32.6) and 13th-place Frankie Maciel (25:42.1). Even their sixth finisher and first non-scorer, Zackary Alexander, claimed the final all-conference spot in 15th place (25:56.5). The Southern Oregon women produced four All-CCC runners and finished second in the team standings for the fourth consecutive season. The No. 11-ranked Raiders accumulated 49 points, while No. 7 College of Idaho rolled to its fourth consecutive title with 17 — the lowest score for a championship team since 2015. Lauren Forster led SOU in seventh place with a 5,000-meter time of 19:11.3, while Alejandra Lopez finished ninth in 19:17.6 and Kayla Clayton was 10th (19:17.6), Sydnee Kizziar finished 12th (19:29.4) and Haylee Brodahl was 16th (19:46.5). Men’s Basketball SOU 73, MENLO (CALIF.) 63: At Rocklin, Calif., Josh Meyer recorded a double-double and Matt Zosel banked a win in his debut as Southern Oregon’s head coach. Meyer shot 7-of-12 from the field to total 18 points and 12 rebounds, leading four Raiders in double figures. Dominic McGarvey, a 6-foot-9 junior transfer, finished with 12 points and five rebounds and senior guard Tez Allen had 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists. Women’s Basketball SOU 72, GEORGE FOX 47: At Klamath Falls, Southern Oregon shook off a slow start and put the clamps on George Fox to open the Lithia-Oregon Tech Classic with a win at Danny Miles Court. Kami Walk and Brianna Phiakhamngon scored 14 points apiece, Kalei Iwami contributed 12, and Emma Schmerbach and Makayla Scurlock combined to shoot 10-of-12 off the bench for the Raiders, who improved to 2-0. Volleyball SOU 3, WARNER PACIFIC 0: At Portland, Southern Oregon clinched a spot in the Cascade Conference Tournament with the straight-set win, 25-20, 25-10, 25-17. The Raiders improved to 19-9 overall and 13-8 in the CCC, and with a win Saturday at Multnomah can claim the No. 3 seed in the six-team tournament that begins Nov. 11. They had no problems against the last-place Knights (1-20, 1-20) as Sadie Byrd had seven kills and three blocks, Simone Gordon totaled seven kills and Karina Oliveira picked up 12 digs.
