Matthew James Christian, of the 2200 block of Sunburst, was taken into custody about an hour after the Jeep was ignited around 10 p.m. Police said a report they received indicated Christian had three Molotov cocktails in his possession. Christian is charged with felony second-degree arson and criminal mischief, and his bail was set at $10,000. Police allege that Christian cut open the soft top on the Jeep, poured gasoline inside and lit it on fire. Police received a call at 9:38 p.m. Monday from a male who said Christian had taken his car, a tan, 1988 BMW, along with three Molotov cocktails and was threatening to torch another vehicle. At 10:03 p.m., police and Medford Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a vehicle engulfed in flames in a parking lot on Ellendale Drive. The Jeep is owned by a 21-year-old whom police haven’t identified. At 10:19 p.m., police spotted the BMW at Lone Pine Road and Springbrook Drive. Christian was interviewed and arrested, police said. Police said Christian was upset with the victim who owned the Jeep, but police wouldn't reveal the nature of the dispute.
