Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Indians shock Tornado Roseburg hands North Medford its first home loss in nearly two years By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune Being short-handed and playing in a hostile environment didn’t seem to be the ideal recipe for a Roseburg upset. But the Indians defied the odds to notch the most stunning victory this season in Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball. Roseburg ran its slow-down offense to perfection and had eighth-ranked North Medford on its heels much of Friday night to spring a 42-36 upset in the Black Tornado gym. North Medford (17-3, 8-2 SOC), which suffered its first home defeat in nearly two years, was so out of sorts in the plodding pace, it shot just 11-for-42 (26 percent) — several misses coming from close range — and trailed 26-14 at the half. Advertisement "We kinda got a little rushed on offense after we fell behind by 10 points," said North coach Tim Karrick, whose team dropped one game behind league-leading Ashland. "You’re not going to win too many games when you shoot the ball like that." The Indians (10-10, 5-5 SOC), on the other hand, finally broke through for a big win after leading in several games only to come up short. "That’s something I told the kids," said Roseburg coach Bob Feasel. "After all the heartaches, this (win) puts an exclamation point on the season so far." North Medford point guard Kailey Bostwick entered the game averaging 13.4 points per contest but finished with 10 points on 1-for-12 shooting. She had three different looks from 3-point range late in the contest but couldn’t connect, setting off a spirited Roseburg celebration as time expired. "This win just proved to us that we should have been doing this from the beginning of the season," said Shayla Corder who, along with freshman guard Katie Wilton, burned the Tornado for 12 points apiece. Playing against a top-10 team in its gym was just one obstacle the Indians had to overcome. Senior Corynn Jorgensen missed the contest and may be lost for the year. The 5-foot-10 post suffered a ruptured cyst on the bus ride home from Klamath Falls Tuesday night. She underwent surgery to remove it and is recovering. "She’s definitely a key component to what we do," said Feasel. "Gosh, she’s such a great kid, too. It was a pretty scary thing." The loss of a key senior leader put the onus on Corder, Wilton and guard Denay Martin to keep the ship afloat. And the trio didn’t disappoint. The Black Tornado, which defeated Roseburg 56-42 the last time the teams met, methodically trimmed a double-digit deficit to 34-31 with just under four minutes to play. But Wilton made 4 of 6 free throws and Martin added a pair to hold off the charge. "We haven’t finished well this year," said Feasel, whose team is now in a three-way tie with South Medford and Grants Pass for third place. "Tonight we finally got over that hump." Roseburg’s plan of attack was apparent from the beginning. The Indians spread the floor and ran back cuts to the basket against North Medford’s extended man defense. The game plan, which whittled anywhere from 45 seconds to sometimes two minutes per possession off the clock, paid off with 10 of Roseburg’s 13 first-quarter points coming on layins. North Medford, meanwhile, scuffled to get six points on just two field goals and a pair of free throws. The Tornado didn’t score its fourth point until the two-minute mark. "We got some good looks, we just couldn’t put the ball through the hoop," lamented Karrick. The second period brought much of the same, with the 5-foot-9 Corder using her size to find cutting teammates from the top of the key. "North Medford loves to run and jump," said Corder of North’s pressing scheme. "We were able to limit that by running our split offense." The Black Tornado began its charge in the third quarter. North’s full-court press finally got to the Indians, resulting in four quick turnovers, two free throws and a layup from Mellisa Eastwold and a driving basket from Michelle Westermann. Bostwick’s 3-for-3 effort from the charity stripe brought North within 28-25 with under four minutes left in the quarter. Corder and Hayley Buckbee, however, answered with two easy hoops to limit the damage. "There’s not much we could do," said Karrick. "You try and pressure (Roseburg) into a mistake ... We just couldn’t put a run together." Eastwold scored 14 points and had four steals to lead North. Westermann finished 3-for-13 from the field for eight points to go with a team-high 12 rebounds, and Bostwick dished out five assists. Teal Westbrook, starting in place of Jorgensen, snatched up seven rebounds, while Martin and Wilton each had four assists.
