RAIDER ROUNDUP: SOU women hold off Beacons By SOU Sports Information Updated: Jan 06, 2023 10:38 PM A A ASHLAND — Following a shooting night the Southern Oregon women’s basketball team would rather forget, the Raiders had the luxury of trashing the box score while still pocketing a quality win Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion. Their defense saved the day again, holding Bushnell without a basket for the final five-plus minutes in a 50-43 Cascade Conference decision. The No. 23-ranked Raiders survived despite going 17-of-69 from the field — a 25% clip that marked their lowest in a victory in at least 10 years. The teams entered the night tied for second place in the standings, but the Raiders jumped to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the CCC while notching their 14th consecutive conference home win. The Beacons, still winless in Ashland since the 2010-11 season, stumbled to 9-4 and 6-2. SOU was up for the final 13 minutes, though not by much. After Olivia Bailon’s free throw cut their advantage to 43-42 with 5 minutes left, Emma Schmerbach went off the dribble for a jumper and Brianna Phiakhamngon extended the lead to six with her third 3-pointer. Phiakhamngon, the CCC’s second-leading scorer, labored through a 4-of-16 performance but totaled 11 points and seven rebounds. Kalei Iwami scored 11, hitting all six of her free-throw attempts, and Schmerbach delivered off the bench with six points, six rebounds and three of the team’s 15 steals. Clara Robbins pulled down a game-high 11 boards for the Raiders. Men’s Basketball BUSHNELL 67, SOU 66: At Ashland, Bushnell guard Trevon Richmond had the final say in a tight Cascade Conference battle against Southern Oregon, nailing a free-throw line jumper with five seconds left for the winning basket. The Beacons (6-8 overall, 4-4 CCC) trailed 66-62 with 42 seconds remaining when Richmond got into the paint for a three-point play that kept his team alive. On the other end, Stevie Schlabach blocked Josh Meyer’s jumper at the end of the shot clock and moments later the ball found Richmond, who came off an on-ball screen to get a clean look for the win. Out of a timeout, Tez Allen’s 3-point look from the wing rimmed off at the buzzer. The Raiders went to 8-6 and 4-4 in the conference. They’d won eight consecutive CCC home games dating back to their 76-71 loss to Bushnell last season in Ashland. SOU guard Atmar Mundu scored 14 points, but he was one of several Raiders to struggle from 3-point range. Collectively, they went 3-of-21 downtown for their lowest make total of the season. Women’s Wrestling NWCA NATIONAL DUALS: At Louisville, Ky., top-ranked Southern Oregon cruised into the NAIA women’s semifinal round, dispatching Ottawa (Kan.), 43-6, and No. 9 Texas Wesleyan, 32-10. In their Round of 16 matchup with Ottawa, the Raiders opened with two forfeit victories and went on to record five pins and two technical falls. In the quarterfinals against TWU, they won the first four matches — including two decisions by tiebreaker criteria — and stayed the course on their way to Saturday’s semifinal dual against No. 5 Menlo (Calif.). Two Raiders earned a pair of wins by fall on the opening day of the tournament: top-ranked Carolina Moreno at 123 pounds, and No. 2-ranked Emily Se at 143. Joye Levendusky, ranked No. 3 at 170, won twice by technical fall. Marissa Kurtz (116), Jordynn Robson (130), Karrah Smith (191) had a pin apiece, each against Ottawa. Esthela Trevino (101) and Desinee Lopez (136) added bonus points with technical falls. No. 8 Glory Konecny posted the upset of the day against TWU, earning a 4-4 victory over No. 4 Camille Fournier, and No. 8 Bella Amaro (136) later took down No. 7 Mea Mohler, 4-1.
