The dancing was quite beautiful. But it’s supposed to be in Spain. My husband thought flamenco came from the gypsies. — Berniece S., Ashland That’s the trouble with music or dance, Berniece. Put it down someplace for a century or two and it mixes with whatever’s handy. While flamenco is believed to have originated among the gypsies of Andalusian Spain, southern Spain was a long-time melting pot, and flamenco reflects that. Advertisement It became popular about the time of the American Revolution. When it spread to ballrooms, the only accompaniment to the vocals was the clapping of hands. Composers such as Julin Arcas added guitar. By the end of the 19th century the form was wildly popular.
