The former Cascade Christian High and Oregon State University standout flew home Friday after a lingering knee injury left him on the sidelines for the past two weeks. Maurer, who graduated from OSU in June with a business degree, is in Medford looking for a job but hasn’t ruled out returning to the Giants later this season. "I know I can play at that level and I’m not ready to shut it down yet," the 23-year-old Maurer said. "The Giants told me that I’m on their short list if a couple of their guys go down." Maurer pulled a tendon that connects the quadriceps muscle in his right leg to his knee while blocking during a scrimmage on July 29. He thought he would be able to return to action in a week but the injury was more serious than first thought. Maurer now expects to be sidelined for another four to six weeks and, because he accepted an injury settlement payment from the Giants, isn’t eligible to rejoin the team for another 10 weeks, he said. Maurer hoped to return to practice on Aug. 7 but failed a series of tests on his leg. "The knee swelled up in a heartbeat," he said. "I saw a doctor the next day and he told me I’d be out three to four weeks, but then after that it was four to six. "It’s really frustrating." Maurer, who helped Oregon State to its best-ever season in 2000 when the Beavers finished 11-1 and routed Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, fared well during his opening week of camp with the Giants. The versatile Maurer logged time at tight end, fullback and special teams, and served as the team’s snapper on punts and field goals. "My first week here (head) coach (Jim) Fassel told me I had a great chance to make the team because I could do so many things," Maurer said. "He said I was a guy who could do three or four different things on one salary and that was something they really liked." Last season, Maurer tried out with the San Diego Chargers but that audition also went sour following an injury. San Diego ultimately released him. "I feel better about my situation with the Giants because they’re utilizing all my skills," Maurer said. "But if I can’t practice they really can’t justify keeping me on their roster, and so I took the settlement and came home." Maurer, who got married in February and bought a home in June, is prepared to retire from football and enter the business world. But he’s not going to wander too far from his phone over the next few months. "I’m going to rehab, get healthy and be ready — just in case," Maurer said.
