Comets head coach Scott Dippel felt like his team’s pressure was going to eventually break down the Pirates, but foul troubles in the first half put that on pause. Once the clock reset and the finish line was in view in the second half, Crater was able to crank things back up again and turned the tide in its favor to run away with a 59-34 road victory. “We played in foul trouble and in the bonus a good portion of the second quarter,” said Dippel. “In the third quarter, the (team) fouls started over and right at the beginning we were able to apply pressure full-court again and had them turn the ball over and converted that into points.” Crater (4-4) wound up outscoring Marshfield 20-6 in the third quarter after holding a 24-20 lead at halftime. The Comets created six of their 28 steals overall in the third quarter. Sophomores Lydia Traore and Sage Winslow helped propel the Comets with 16 points apiece against the Pirates (5-4), who had won four of their last five games. “This was probably Lydia’s best game of her career offensively,” said Dippel. “She just played really well against all three of their posts.” Traore also provided eight rebounds and six steals, while Addison Vranes had eight points, four rebounds and six steals. Annie Idiart supplied six points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals for Crater, which is battling a sickness that is running through the program but will now have a week off to get healthy. NORTH MEDFORD 39, WESTVIEW 32: At Lake Oswego, North Medford made a couple defensive changes at halftime and focused on getting to the basket more in the second half to break a 19-all tie at intermission and win the fourth-place final in the red bracket of the Nike Interstate Shoout. It was the second meeting between the teams, with Westview winning 49-40 10 days prior in Medford. Olivia Boger had 18 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals to lead the Black Tornado (3-3), while Caileigh Raines added 14 points, four steals and five rebounds. Boden Howell scored 26 points and Jackson Weiland had 18 to lead the Panthers (3-4), who will play Roosevelt of Washington at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in their tournament finale. SOUTHRIDGE 59, NORTH MEDFORD 53: At Lake Oswego, junior Andrew Plankenhorn paced North Medford with 14 points and knocked down three of the team’s eight 3-pointers but turnovers in the second half doomed the Black Tornado in the opening round of the Lakeridge Tournament. North Medford (0-6) got off to a slow start but went on a second-quarter surge before taking a 35-32 lead by scoring the first five points in the third quarter. However, North committed turnovers on three of its next four possessions to fall behind Southridge (6-1) again. The Black Tornado cut it to 52-50 with about a minute left but was forced to foul down the stretch. North Medford, which will next play at 2 p.m. Tuesday, also got nine points from Davis Carr and seven from Nolan Kelly. Junior Ashton Acrey added 16 points for Crater, which jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter.
