Mail Tribune 100, Oct. 2, 1922 By Alissa Corman Oct 02, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Oct. 2, 1922 BIG CROWDS AT PROSPECT OVER THE WEEKEND The weather was never more ideal, the forests more beautiful or Crater Lake sublime than now, according to local people who made the trip yesterday. The recent rains have laid the dust and the light snow that has fallen at the lake, part of which still remains in the forests and on some of the mountain slopes and rim of the lake, adds to the beauty of the scenery. Although the lodge at the lake is closed, Grieve’s favorite Prospect resort is still open and will remain open so long as the travel warrants. The splendid reputation of this resort is so well known to all Medford and Southern Oregon people that further mention is unnecessary. However, they have just installed one of the most up-to-date new radio receiving stations on the coast for their patrons’ pleasure and pick up concerts, lectures and sermons from all over the country. Saturday night their guests were entertained by concerts from Salt Lake and Seattle, and Sunday night by a sermon from Sacramento and music from other cities. They will also receive the music hereafter from the Jackson County Amusement company furnished by Launspach’s orchestra. The ideal trip is to drive to Prospect in the afternoon, stay all night, drive to the lake the next morning and around the rim, if you so desire, back to Prospect for 6 o’clock dinner and either stay all night or drive home after dinner. Many prefer doing this and there were forty at Prospect Saturday night. LOCAL TOURIST BUREAU CLOSES FOR SEASON The local office of the Oregon Tourist Information bureau located in the Chamber of Commerce building closes today, and A. H. Callahan, local representative of the bureau, will devote his entire time to a local commercial enterprise. During the brief period of its operation the local office has handled more than 4400 inquiries in addition to giving out large numbers of descriptive folders, maps and other printed information. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Because of the showers of last night and this morning fruit picking in the orchards was generally dispensed with for the day, or until it dries up. Eleven more cars of pears were shipped east from here yesterday. The total number of cars of pears shipped from here thus far numbers 1085. ----- The crop of acorns which is heavier in this vicinity than for many years past, and which has been falling intermittently for a week or two, was about all loosened from the oak trees by last night’s storm during which the wind blew rather hard. The ground beneath the oak trees in this city was practically covered by acorns this morning. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
