Did it used to come in the mail? — M.P., Medford The exact reason for the word "mail" in the newspaper’s title is unclear. Historically, "mail" has been a relatively common name for newspapers. However, subscribers could order the Mail Tribune through the mail in the early to mid-1900s. In fact, a mail subscription actually cost less than having it delivered. An Aug. 31, 1937, advertisement offered a subscription by mail for $3.50 a month versus carrier service for $5. Advertisement The Mail Tribune started out as The Mail, Medford’s third newspaper, in 1888, according to History of Oregon Newspapers by George S. Turnbull. By 1893 when A.S. Bliton bought the newspaper, it was known as the Southern Oregon Mail. Bliton changed the name to Medford Mail to focus news coverage on Medford, Turnbill wrote. In 1909, the Medford Daily Tribune bought the Medford Mail, and the newspaper’s name became Medford Mail Tribune. To reflect an expansion in coverage, the Medford Mail Tribune became simply the Mail Tribune, in 1989.
