The Lumberjacks are the fifth-ranked team in NCAA Division II. Hooks, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward, scored a team-best 16 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds as Humboldt State improved to 4-0. The Raiders (1-7) lost their sixth straight despite 25 points from senior guard Zac Olson. "That was one of the best basketball teams we’ve played in my time here (at SOU)," seventh-year Raider coach Brian McDermott said. "I thought our guys played very hard and did some good things against a group of outstanding athletes." After Southern cut a 48-36 halftime deficit to eight a minute into the second stanza, but Humboldt broke the game open with a 21-3 run culminating in a 69-43 edge with 11:53 remaining. In addition to Hooks, the Lumberjacks, who return four starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the West Region title tilt, received three other double-digit scoring performances: 15 off the bench by sophomore forward Chuck Webster, 14 from senior guard J’ontar Coleman and 11 from junior guard Kaylin Thornton. Coleman finished 4-for-5 from 3-point range and helped HSU shoot 49 percent from the floor (34 of 69). Senior Brandon Knudsen, who started in place of injured point guard T.J. Caughell, tallied nine points for SOU, while junior center Jordan France hauled in nine rebounds and blocked two shots in his first start as a Raider. Southern travels to Salem this weekend to take on Willamette and Linfield in the Bearcat John Lewis Classic.
