"We are fortunate to attract such promising student-athletes to complement our returning players who have established a solid foundation," Chavez said. "Overall, this is a young group with a wide range of experience, but I feel each has the potential to be a solid college player." The Raider newcomers are: Judi Dietz, a defender from Lake Tahoe, Calif. The three-year first-team all-league, all-region and all-state player led North Tahoe High to the Nevada finals three times and played on state title teams in 2000 and ‘03. Mara Rappleyea, a 5-foot-7 midfielder from Woodburn, and Kristin Mazzei, a 5-7 forward from Salem. The longtime Salem United Mirage club players helped Blanchet Catholic High win four straight regional championships and were key members of the 2001 Class 3A/2A/1A state runner-up squad. Rappleyea, the 2003 District 8 MVP and Statesman Journal player of the year, was a member of the Olympic Development Program traveling team. Stephani Catt, a center/midfielder from Portland. A three-year varsity player for Madison High, Catt was team captain, offensive MVP and first-team all-Portland Interscholastic League as a senior. Advertisement Melanie Hopkins, a 5-8 goalkeeper from Salt Lake City, Utah. Hopkins surrendered only two goals and posted 14 shutouts during the 2003 season to help Judge Memorial Catholic High win a back- to-back Class 3A state championship and a fourth consecutive regional crown. Hopkins was a member of a Northwest all-star club team that toured Europe in 2001. Brei McCoy, a 5-6 forward from Philomath. The speedy wing and academic All-American was an honorable mention Val-Co all-star on Philomath High’s 2003 state semifinal soccer team. She qualified for the Class 3A track and field championships as a 100-meter sprinter and as a long jumper. Kelcie Morita and Stephanie Kashiwabara (midfielders from Kauai High in Lihue, Hawaii), and Kara Bradach (a second-team Metro Conference all-star midfielder from Tigard High). The recruiting class augments a solid group of returning players featuring five Cascade Conference or NAIA Region I all-stars from last year’s SOU squad that tied for the league South Division title and posted a program-best 11-7 final record.
