I have a couple dozen to give away. — Margaret J., Medford Good question, Margaret. If you mean those do-it-yourself books under the Reader’s Digest Books imprint, some organizations that accept book donations literally specify "no Reader’s Digest books." We asked a couple local retirement homes, and one said "sometimes," and the other said "probably not," but you could call around. Also, they are sometimes sold cheaply, in lots, on eBay. On the other hand if you mean Reader’s Digest condensed books, we can’t think of a good use other than as doorstops, paperweights or ballast for hot air balloons. If we care what a writer has to say, we’ll let him say it in his own words. The idea that a reader can "get," say, "To Kill a Mockingbird," by reading a plot summary is like thinking you can "get" what a chocolate cake is by reading a recipe book. Author Chuck Palahniuk recently referred to "those terrible, terrible Reader’s Digest condensed books ... where they’d strip each book down to nothing but plot and publish five novels combined in a single binding."
