Kalich, the foremost actress appearing in the photo-drama "Slander," which opens at the Page theater today for a two-day program. Bertha Kalich was born in Lemberg, Galicia, and has been before the public since her fourteenth year, making her first appearance at that age in operetta. She appeared at the Bucharest National theater and remained there until her talent had asserted itself to such a degree that she was advanced to leading roles. A tour followed, her fame grew and twenty years ago the manager of one of the Yiddish theaters on New York's east side induced her to come to this country. On the east side this young and remarkable woman played in the strenuous Yiddish melodramas and in plays of Suderman, Ibsen, Tolstoi, Strindberg, Sardon and Gordin, drawing from uptown New York audiences who never before had entered a foreign language theater and many of whom understood not a word of the dialogue. With her own following, Mme. Kalich achieved great popularity, accumulated a fortune of the east side and became one of the principal owners of the Kalich theater, named in her honor. Since theatrical successes are usually measured in terms of dollars and cents, it is of interest to note that not only one, but several of the plays in which Mme. Kalich starred in the theater bearing her name made net profits of $40,000 each in runs of fourteen consecutive weeks. EAGLE POINT EAGLETS Among the callers Wednesday were Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Rigdon, Miss E. Hogue, Miss Maud Booth and Dr. R. A. Jones, all of San Francisco, Calif. They are simply traveling over the country to see it. They came up the coast to Crescent City, to Grants Pass, Eagle Point and went on up to Prospect. They seemed to be anxious to visit the power plant near Prospect, intending to retrace their steps and go to eastern Oregon via Klamath Falls and want to visit Crater Lake before returning. They may possibly go as far as Bend. They were undecided as to what course they may take after reaching Klamath Falls. They seem to be very much pleased with our valley.
