August 29. 2015 2:00AM St. Mary's falls short in season opener St. Mary’s got off to a brilliant start but couldn’t quite keep it going Friday in season-opening girls soccer at U.S. Cellular Community Park. Emily Elmore’s breakaway goal in the sixth minute provided St. Mary’s with a 1-0 advantage over Catlin Gabel, but the Eagles responded with a pair of second-half goals to secure a 2-1 nonconference victory. “It was really a very good first outing for us because we have not been able to train outdoors,” said St. Mary’s head coach Dave Potter, referring to the poor air quality due to numerous fires. “We’ve been training in the gym most of the time and when we do get outdoors we can only train about 60 percent most of the time.” Elmore carried the ball from near midfield before beating a pair of defenders and the Catlin Gabel goalkeeper from 12 yards out. She nearly doubled the Crusaders’ advantage 10 minutes later, only to flip the ball over a charging goalie just wide of the goal. “Emily just did a phenomenal job on both opportunities and the second one was just out of reach,” said Potter. Catlin Gabel’s Aliya Mahmoud managed to tie the match in the 45th minute, and all-state standout Sam Slusher provided the go-ahead goal in the 65th on a shot from 22 yards out that caromed off the inside of the left far post and rolled down the goal line before the referee ruled it had crossed the line. Boys Soccer CATLIN GABEL 3, ST. MARY’S 2: Catlin Gabel erased a 1-0 first-half deficit with three straight goals in the second half and held off a late charge by St. Mary’s in the nonconference opener for both teams at U.S. Cellular. St. Mary’s took the lead with an assisted indirect kick by Alec Robertson to Hunter Rothfus from the top of the box that found the back of the net. Catlin Gabel scored twice early in the second half and built a 3-1 lead with 18 minutes to go on a corner kick that was deflected in by a Crusader player. A header goal by Justin Silsbee trimmed the deficit for St. Mary’s but the Crusaders were turned away down the stretch. Volleyball BUTTE FALLS SWEEPS: At Glendale, Butte Falls won its opening two nonleague matches of the season, defeating Glendale, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-13, and Days Creek, 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 on Thursday. Raleigh Weaver had 18 kills against Glendale and nine kills and six aces against Days Creek.
