Mustangs suffer two Area 4 setbacks The Medford Mustangs, who were hotter than hot a week ago, stumbled to their weekend slide extended to four games Sunday when Eugene swept an Area 4 American Legion doubleheader, 6-5 and 10-6. Despite the losing streak, the Mustangs provided a bright spot by pulling off a rare triple play in the third inning of the opener. With runners on first and second, Eugene's Dave Mulvahill hit a sharp line drive to center field that was snagged by Charlie Jensen. Jensen whipped the ball to first for the second out and first baseman Colby Gonzales completed the play throwing out the runner on second. Gonzales led Medford with three hits in four at-bats, including a home run. Teammates, Jensen, Jarred Pagnini and Chuck Shine had two hits each. The Mustangs outhit Eugene 12-8, but left eight men on base in the opening game. Brent Foster paced the Mustangs in the nightcap with three hits, while Jim Pickrel and Nate Mayben each had two. Medford (42-7) remains in first place in Area 4 American Legion action with an 11-3 mark, one game up on Eugene and Roseburg. The Mustangs take on Klamath Falls Tuesday at Miles Field.
