Roseburg beats back Eagle Point EAGLE POINT � Eagle Point stayed close with SOC champion Roseburg, but eventually the Indians� size wore down the Eagles for a 64-43 win. The Indians (19-4, 13-1 SOC) held a four-point lead at half-time, but outscored the Eagles 36-19 in the second half. That second-half discrepancy was due largely to the fact that the Eagles could not contend with the size of the Indians, giving them high percentage shots and frequent trips to the free throw line. The Indians shot 53 percent (21-40) from the field and had 29 free throw attempts compared to two for the Eagles. "They finally just got to us with their size," said Eagle coach Keith Williams. "We just couldn�t contend with their size." Brennan Garrelts, a 6-foot-7 post, scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half. He also grabbed eight rebounds. The Eagles committed 20 turnovers, including nine in the third quarter. Senior Matt Campbell scored a career-high 22 points in his final game as an Eagle. He shot 9-for-11 from the field including 4-for-5 from three-point range. The Eagles finished the season at 9-15 overall and 4-10 in SOC play. The Indians receive an automatic berth to the Class 4A state tournament for winning the SOC title. Grants Pass (22-2, 12-2 SOC) secured second place in the final SOC contest and will need a victory in a home playoff game March 3 to qualify for the state tournament. Ian Elseth and Tyler York paced the Cavemen with 11 points each. Grants Pass led 32-17 at halftime and built a 24-point margin entering the fourth quarter. Kyle Allred led Ashland with 10 points. Class 4A Girls Playoffs GRESHAM 45, KLAMATH UNION 44 � At Gresham, Brandyce Nelson hit the first of two free throws with five seconds to play, lifting the Gresham Gophers to a first-round playoff victory over Klamath Union. The contest matched the No. 3 team from the Mount Hood Conference and the No. 4 entry from the Southern Oregon Conference. Lindsey Hill, who led all scorers with 18 points, splashed a 3-pointer to tie it, 44-44, with 1:20 to play. Klamath failed in its next offensive opportunity and Hill missed her shot inside 10 seconds. But Nelson, who sprained her ankle in the first quarter, grabbed the ball and was fouled by Megan Leppert. The Pelicans (14-9) were unable to get the ball past half-court as time expired. Gresham (18-6) jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Klamath rallied for a 25-19 lead in the second period. Sam Gilbert and Sarah Davison led the Pels with 10 points each. Nelson added 11 points for the Gophers, who play Silverton in Thursday�s second round.
