Morales won comfortably, finishing over 15 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Andrew Nelson, who ran the course in 3:03:55. Morales has won the Rim Run every time he has raced, including three in a row before having to sit out due to an injury last year. Each year Morales has improved his time. His first winning time was 2:53:38, and he’s been slowly closing in on the course record of 2:34:38. For about the first quarter of the race Morales ran alongside his daughter Esperansa Morales, who won the women’s division of the 6.7-mile race and was third overall. Esperansa, who won the women’s division of the Pear Blossom Run (10 miles) as an 11-year-old in April, ran the 6.7-mile race in just 40:42, only a minute off the course record. Grace Hooberwon took the women’s crown in 4:43:49, and was sixteenth overall. Another Klamth Falls resident dominated, winning the half marathon race. Ben Blake finished in 1:27:21, almost 6 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Ryan Sullivan, and the top female, Erica Hunsberger, was close behind in third. As a senior last year at Klamath Union, Blake finished 10th in the Class 4A cross country state championships. Michael Rotellini won the men’s 6.7-mile race in 39:19. The course is a grueling series of climbs around the rim of the lake, with the elevation reaching 7,850 feet above sea level.
