Is it possible to have a city worker or traffic person check this particular signal? It is very dangerous because the light will not change for cars on Cedar Links Drive unless there is more than one car waiting. Many of my neighbors in the Vista Point area have had the same problem. So far the only thing we've been able to do is run the red light when no traffic is coming. This is an accident waiting to happen. Please help! — G.G., Medford G.G., we promptly took your question to the Medford Public Works Department and they promptly checked it out. But, according to Alex Georgevitch, deputy public works director and city engineer, the signal is working properly. He noted that the signal detection on Cedar Links has a five-second delay before activating so that cars on Cedar Links that are able to turn right on a red won't cause the light to unnecessarily change for cars on Foothill. Because of that, he said, it's important for drivers to know that they must stop at the stop bar (left turn) or crosswalk (right turn) and stay there for at least five seconds before the signal controller will recognize a car is there. Then, depending on timing, the controller will eventually turn the light to green for Cedar Links. He said because of the higher speeds on Foothill, there is a longer yellow light (4.7 seconds) plus an additional seven-tenths of a second in which all lights are red. That, he said, can "make things feel a little more sluggish." As evidence they took your question seriously, the city's traffic operations crew did put red paint over the sensor loops to help aid people in locating where the detection zones are.
