Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Medical condition contributes to non-fatal crash A 45-year-old Eagle Point man was hospitalized Friday after his PT Cruiser rear-ended another vehicle on the Medford viaduct, then slid three miles along a concrete barrier before crashing and overturning several times, police said. Timothy Lyle Kitchen was listed in fair condition late Friday at Rogue Valley Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said. Investigators believe Kitchen suffers from an undisclosed medical condition that contributed to the accidents, Oregon State Police Lt. Kurt Barthel said. Witnesses driving along the Medford viaduct just before 10 a.m. reported seeing Kitchen’s PT Cruiser headed north on Interstate 5 traveling about 90 mph, Barthel said. About one mile north of the Barnett Road intersection, the PT Cruiser rammed the back end of another car. Passengers in the vehicle were not injured, Barthel said. The make of the car was not available. After the collision, the PT Cruiser struck a concrete barrier separating northbound and southbound lanes of traffic. Barthel said the car slid along the barrier for more than three miles before it slammed into a large dirt mound along the freeway near the north Medford interchange. The vehicle went airborne and finally came to rest after flipping several times, Barthel said. No citations were issued Friday. The crash remains under investigation. One lane of Interstate 5 was temporarily shut down while OSP troopers and emergency personnel worked at the crash scene. Barthel said the wreck did not cause any serious traffic delays.
