Someone's stealing water from Gold Hill fire hydrants Wednesday Mar 1, 2017 at 4:48 PM Mar 1, 2017 at 4:48 PM By Lisa Whiting of the Grants Pass Daily Courier GOLD HILL — Just when the city believed its water system to be trouble free after repairing or replacing several broken water mains last year, a new problem has come to light. According to Mayor Christina Stanley, thieves have been stealing water from town fire hydrants. The problem was first discovered when city workers noticed lower water level readings in one of the town's two reservoirs, Stanley said. "I myself found one hydrant with its cap off, city workers located two and a citizen found another, one which had its cap taken off twice," Stanley said. The city has two storage reservoirs, one in use and one for back-up. It was the one being used where the lower readings alerted workers. It was reported that the city is losing more than 5,000 gallons of water each time a hydrant is found with a missing cap. The community has been asked to keep an eye out for suspicious activity. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
