Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 7, 1915 A ways and means committee was appointed by the city council Tuesday night at the regular session, composed of Councilmen Medynski, Miles and Amy, to investigate the feasibility of erecting a new city hall on the vacant lot adjoining the present site. It is argued a new city hall is needed to insure a vault for the city records, and that the $5,000 needed for its construction could be raised by an additional levy. The committee will report on the feasibility of the plan at the next regular meeting. Petitions from the plumbers asking for a reduction of the present license resulted in the fee being clipped to $5 per annum. A petition asking for the removal of three unsightly shacks at 10th and Ivy streets was referred to the Seattle owners of the property for action. The shacks are said to be the rendezvous of tramps. Former Councilman Mitchell explained that he was being discriminated against in the matter of blacksmith work, showing that he received $3 worth of work, where Merriman received $26. Mr. Mitchell's plea resulted in a lively interchange of words with no action. Electrical Inspector Hinman is liable to get a new car, the council having under consideration a plan to turn in his present vehicle for a new Ford. The old car costs heavily to keep running. Councilman Miles recommended that unnecessary lights throughout the city be eliminated. George Carstens was granted a liquor license. The report of Police Judge Gay showed that $93 in fines had been assessed, with $63 collected.   Henry O'Malley, field superintendent of the U.S. Bureau of hatcheries, arrived in Medford today and left at once on a trip of inspection to the Elk Creek hatchery. "This promises to be the record year in steelhead propagation in the Rogue River," states Mr. O'Malley. "We have taken over a million eggs at Elk creek, and over three million at the Applegate station. The total may reach five million. These will be hatched and liberated in the Rogue, a million being kept at Elk Creek until they reach the fingerling stage. Our propagation work is beginning to tell, and we look for an annual increase in the number of steelhead in the river."
