Ouellette slam lifts Mustangs Phil Ouellette picked a good time to hit his first home run of the season. Ouellette cracked a grand slam that highlighted an eight-run fifth inning Thursday night at Miles Field as the Medford Mustangs rallied past Bay Area of Coos Bay 11-5 in the first game of an Area 4 doubleheader. The Mustangs completed a sweep with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. Medford trailed 5-3 going into the bottom of the fifth in the opening game when the fireworks began. Charlie Jensen homered deep to left to make it 5-4. Matt Skundrick then drew a walk, Evan McArthur singled and Ken Halpin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Quellette followed with his bases-clearing clout deep to right center that gave the Mustangs an 8-5 lead. The Mustangs added two more runs in the inning thanks to an error and Dan Bruces RBI single. Tony Conklin allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win in Game 1 and improve his record to 6-1. In Game 2, Medford overcame a 4-3 deficit with a fourth-run fourth inning and never looked back. Shawn Backstroms two-run single and Travis Dunlaps two-run triple fueled the uprising. The sweep improved Medfords Area 4 record to 5-3 and its overall mark to 24-11.
