Gilchrist edges St. Marys Scoring wouldnt have seemed like an issue when the St. Marys boys basketball team met up with Gilchrist Friday. The Crusaders came into the Southern Cascade League state tournament seeding contest averaging close to 70 points a game. The points werent as easy to come by, however, as the Gilchrist rode a tenacious zone defense and a 14-6 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to a 40-39 win over the host Crusaders. With the win, the Grizzlies move on to the Class 2A state tournament in Pendleton as the No. 1 seed, while St. Marys goes as the second seed. St. Marys opens tournament play with a 9 p.m. game against Tri River top seed Regis on Tuesday. The Crusaders held a 17-15 lead at halftime and upped the margin to 33-26 after three quarters. St. Marys (18-5) hit seven 3-point goals in the contest but cooled off in the final period. "It wasnt a pretty game," said St. Marys coach Tim Pflugg. "They played a tight, packed-in zone, so we hit some 3s ... just not enough of them." The Crusaders held Gilchrists leading scorer, Brad Haynes, to just six points but just couldnt find the hoop. "It (the game) was a little out of character for both teams," said Pflugg. "It almost looked like you were watching a game out of a time warp." Michael Fiddler led St. Marys with 10 points and six blocks. Andrew Knotts paced the Grizzlies with 14 points. GILCHRIST (40) Ernst 12, Ke. Wirtz 0, Ky. Girls LOST RIVER 71, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 44 At Merrill, Cascade Christian stayed with fourth-ranked Lost River (23-1) early, but the SCL regular-season champion Raiders pulled away to secure the leagues No. 1 seed to the Class 2A state tournament in Pendleton. Cascade Christian (21-5) goes as the SCLs No. 2 team and plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against West Valley League tournament champion Santiam Christian. This is the Challengers third straight state tournament appearance and the fourth in the last five years. "Im not sure if three games in the same week might have had a toll as far as our quickness was concerned," Cascade Christian coach Loren King said. "We seemed to run out of gas." The Challengers trailed by just one point at the end for the first quarter, but Lost River went on a 38-17 surge over the next two periods to easily post its third victory over Cascade this season. "Their experience took over," said King. "They were a little more calm than us. Theyre a very good basketball team." Kelly Clarke and Hannah Gettman each scored nine points to lead Cascade.
