St. Mary's moves on St. Mary�s first appearance in the girls state soccer playoffs was a successful one. The Crusaders dominated the action against Molalla, but sophomore forward Emily Smith�s goal in the 33rd minute proved to be enough during the 1-0 victory. The Crusaders, the District 6 No. 2 seeded team, next travels to Beaverton Tuesday to play District 2 champion Valley Catholic in the round of 16 of the Class 3A/2A/1A playoffs. "They (Molalla) didn�t have much offensive push," St. Mary�s coach George Tiger said. "It stayed on their end of the field most of the game. Our goalkeeper Annie Maurer touched the ball only two or three times." Smith, the Crusaders� leading scorer, tallied an unassisted goal from 18 yards with a low shot directed near the far post. Tiger credited senior defender Shawna Jackson with keeping the Crusaders attack viable throughout the match. "She was bringing the ball back and sending it down to our offensive end," said Tiger. Kara Schones, Nellie Barnard and Margo Chamberlain helped the Crusaders control the midfield. "We had like 18 shots compared to their two," said Tiger. "We had some very close opportunities that just went outside the goal." HIDDEN VALLEY 3, SOUTH UMPQUA 1 � At Tri-City, South Umpqua scored first in the 6th minute but the Mustangs posted three first-half goals in a first round Class 3A/2A/1A girls soccer state playoff match. Hidden Valley�s Fay Jaramillo tied the contest at 1-all in the 8th minute, gathering in a rebound off the goal post and then depositing it into the net from 6-yards out. Kim Hill gave the Mustangs the lead in the 37th minute when her direct kick from 40-yards out sailed over the goalkeeper�s head. Shea Ford tacked on the third goal in stoppage time off an assist by Jaramillo, who sent a nifty crossing pass from the right side. Sheena Gannon helped make the score stand up for Hidden Valley with a couple nice saves in the second half. The Mustangs advance to the round of 16 and face Catlin Gabel in Portland at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
