Turn looks wrong, but it's right When you are traveling east on Stewart Avenue in Medford, and you get to Barnett Road, is it legal to make a right-hand turn from the center lane on a red arrow? I see people do this periodically, so I was wondering if it's legal or if they're just in a hurry. -- Jim D., Medford Those drivers may be in a hurry, Jim, but Medford police tell us that their turns are legal. "As long as drivers in the lane stop first, they can make a turn on a red light or arrow if traffic permits," said Medford Sgt. Tom McCleary. But drivers who decide to make the turn from the center lane should take extreme caution and be on the lookout for drivers turning left onto Stewart from Barnett, McCleary said. Traffic on the off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5 also turns left onto Barnett. Additionally, the 1997-99 Oregon Driver Manual, page 23, states that the rules that apply to a steady red ball light also apply to a red arrow. Drivers must stop at the stop line or before they enter the nearest crosswalk or intersection. When entering a two-way street, drivers may make the right turn after stopping.
