PREP BASEBALL: Lacey's home run sparks Crater win By Staff reports Mar 26, 2019 09:16 PM A A CENTRAL POINT — Crater’s Andy Lacey had the hot bat in the Comets’ opening game in the Crater Spring Break Tournament at Anhorn Field Tuesday. Lacey produced the winning hit in an 8-5 victory over Ridgeview in the six-team round-robin event. The junior third baseman went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. His two-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Comets (3-3) a 6-0 lead. Winless Ridgeview (0-4) came back to make things interesting by scoring three runs in the fifth and two more in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Carter, who entered in relief in the sixth for Comet sophomore starter Dawson Douglas, got out of the jam on a grounder back to the mound with runners on second and third. Crater catcher Ike Gilliland collected two hits and had one RBI. The Comets were missing three starters against the Intermountain Conference Ravens. “Our younger kids stepped in and contributed,” said Comet coach Jay Campbell. “We did a good job swinging the bat. NORTH MEDFORD TAKES TWO: At Pendleton, Ryan Sandoval threw his second shutout of the season against Redmond and blasted two home runs against La Salle Prep to lead the Black Tornado to a pair of wins and a berth in the championship game of the Red Lion Buckaroo Classic at the Blue Mountain Community College Baseball Field. Sandoval tossed a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as North Medford beat Redmond 8-0, then had three hits and four RBIs to help the Tornado beat La Salle, 13-3 in five innings. In North’s first game of the day, Ryan Kloek scored on an error in the fourth to give the Tornado (5-3) the only run it would need, and Josh Baptiste (2-for-4, two RBIs) hit a run-scoring double in the fifth to help his team gain some separation. Against La Salle, North blasted four home runs — Sandoval’s, plus a three-run drive by Taven Passey in the first inning and a solo shot by Devyn Grafton. Brady Buchanan, Jeremiah Huffman and Jett Carpenter had two hits apiece for North, which led 8-0 after two innings and finished with 12 hits. LAKERIDGE 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: South Medford was limited to only two hits at Harry & David Field — one each by Zac Ankeny and Chase Costanti — in the opening game of what will be a three-game nonleague series this week. Ankeny had a sixth-inning double, stole third base and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Costanti, who previously singled in the fifth for the Panthers (4-2). Cameron Clayton, Cooper Justice and Brian Hamlin each had two hits for Lakeridge (4-1), which will play South Medford again today at U.S. Cellular Community Park and Friday on its home field. Knight struck out two and walked four to earn the win for the Cavemen (5-2), who will next play a doubleheader against West Salem beginning at 1 p.m. today. Payton Calabro had three hits and three RBIs to pace GP, while Sean Tobin and Cade King added two hits apiece. Jett Hood and Jake Henricks each drove in two runs for the Cavemen. Leadoff hitter Eli Westrick went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Rowan Amann 2-for-4 with a double and Traber Burns scored three times for the Grizzlies (5-3). Evan McLennan picked up the pitching win for Ashland after tossing four innings of relief, surrendering three runs — all unearned — on five hits while striking out four without a walk. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 8-12, ROGUE RIVER 1-1: Sam Martin threw a complete game and drove in three runs in the first game, and Erich Marschall and Daniel Carter had two hits apiece in the second game, powering the Challengers to the nonleague sweep at U.S. Cellular Community Park. Martin, a right-handed sophomore, struck out 10 and surrendered only one unearned run to pick up his first win of the season for Cascade Christian (2-3). At the plate, Caleb Knight delivered a two-run triple in the second as the Challengers opened up a 3-0 lead. In the nightcap, Rogue River (1-3) struck first with a leadoff double by Caden Tognoni and RBI single by Dyllan Houser, but the Challengers answered. After scoring three in the second to take a 4-1 lead, Cascade Christian erupted for seven in the fourth — two on an RBI double by Carter — to blow the game open. Marschall was 2-for-3 and starting pitcher Jadon Rullamas picked up the win after holding the Chieftains to one run in five innings with five strikeouts.
