No. 10-ranked Holy Names rallies past Raiders ASHLAND - The 10th-ranked Holy Names College women's basketball team came from behind to tip Southern Oregon University, 77-72, for the Super 8 Invitational championship at McNeal Pavilion on Saturday. With the Hawks (14-4) clinging to a 74-72 lead with 17 seconds remaining, senior guard Mya Paul nailed a pair of free throws to help Holy Names stave off the upset and secure the school's first championship in four appearances in the annual four-team event. Southern Oregon, which also dropped an 85-71 decision to the Hawks in Oakland on Nov. 30, is 6-6 overall. Holy Names erased a 33-21 first-half deficit with a 16-4 run shortly before the half, and after the Raiders grabbed a 56-50 lead with 10:45 remaining, the Hawks took the lead for good at 72-70 on a putback by senior forward Desarae Spafford with 2:24 to go. Holy Names overcame poor field goal shooting (29 of 81, 36 percent) with a commanding 54-43 rebounding advantage. "(Holy Names) hammered us on the boards," Raider coach Kevin Wilson said, "but we played some great team ball for three quarters of the game. Overall, it was a good effort against a very talented team." The setback spoiled a second straight career-best outing by Raider junior forward Kara Magee-Arick, who followed up last night's 16-point explosion with 7-for-11 shooting and four consecutive 3-pointers en route to a team-high 20 points. "Kara believes in herself, understands her role and shot the lights out for the second straight night," Wilson said. Junior guard Kelly Dexter scored 13 in a reserve role. Hawk senior All-American forward Tyesia Hunter collected a game-high 22 points.
