Mazama girls put playoff drive in high gear KLAMATH FALLS - For two weeks now the Mazama girls basketball team has been without two starters due to injury. That hasn't hampered their playoff drive, however. The Vikings hit 11 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter and outscored visiting Phoenix 22-11 in the final frame for a 39-29 victory on Tuesday. The win pulls Mazama into a tie for fourth place with the Pirates in the Skyline Conference at 5-6 with three games each left on the schedule. The fourth-place team hosts the fifth-place squad in the first round of the Skyline playoffs. "If you would have told me two weeks ago that we would lose two starters and still be in the (league) playoff hunt I would have thought you were crazy," said Mazama coach Ross Hall, who lost senior starter Lindsey English to a broken hand and sophomore Erin Boshuizen to a dislocated knee cap. "Some of these younger kids have stepped up and worked hard and that's made all the difference." Krystal Lawrence scored a game-high 11 points for the Vikings (7-11 overall), while Brea Miller finished with 10. The game was nip and tuck throughout with neither team really distancing themselves from the other until Mazama's fourth-quarter parade to the free throw line. "We've been really struggling in a lot of areas shooting wise," said Hall, whose team had only connected on 48 percent of their foul shots throughout the season. "But we haven't given up on it. The last three or four games has been a big improvement for us." Jamie Cavener led the Pirates with eight points, while Tiffany Ross added seven.
