LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Dec. 23 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Dec. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Signal is confusing The intersection at Columbus Avenue and Diamond Street is the most stupidly designed intersection I have ever seen. Traffic on Columbus is controlled by a light that is normally off. When activated by a pedestrian, it begins as a flashing yellow, then solid yellow, then solid red, then flashing red. A motorist is expected to slow on flashing yellow, stop on yellow and stay stopped on solid red. Then proceed with caution on flashing red if the crosswalk is clear. The problem is that vehicle traffic at the stop signs on Diamond have no idea what is going on. All they can see from their perspective is a stop sign. I have seen cars on Diamond who see cars on Columbus stopping and then proceeding on the flashing red. Having thus been confused they then pull out in front of the next car in line who does not stop because the light has just gone out. This type of signal light should never be placed at an intersection. I hope the right people see this letter. Skip Algeo Medford Thanks for the music For 25 years, Dr. Margaret Evans has served as the music director at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She has served with dedication, talent and with love. Her music has graced and enhanced our worship and through it we’ve felt the presence of God. Believing this experience goes beyond Sunday morning worship, Peggy created the “Music at St. Mark’s” concert series. Many in our community have enjoyed and supported the musical offerings this series has brought to the wider community. The series culminates each year with our Gala New Year’s Eve Concert, often a standing-room-only event. Peggy resigned her position earlier this month and this year’s concert will be the last under her leadership. Please join us at St. Mark’s on Thursday, Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. to ring in the New Year and to thank Peggy for her ministry in our community. Janet Alpine and Christian Mathisen Talent We're in this together These, I think, are the characteristics of a true "elitist" — one who cares only about me and mine at the expense of everyone/everything else: Doesn't want to pay taxes to support the common good (education, health care, infrastructure, transportation, law enforcement, research, libraries, etc.). Denies existence and ramifications of human-created climate change, despite scientific proof and escalating destruction worldwide. Supports uncontrolled gun and ammunition ownership, including weapons of mass destruction, despite ongoing slaughter of innocents. Demonizes popularly elected president and government in general (the government is us). Denies need for government services unless he needs/wants them. Demonizes anyone who disagrees with him. Even if there was an excuse for such elitist thought and behavior, it is short-sighted and will ultimately destroy said elitists, along with everyone else, because, like it or not, now more than ever, we're all in this together. When we support the common good, we support me and mine. When we are selfish and hateful (full of hate), we destroy. Julia Sommer Ashland Who will confront Trump?
