On Tuesday, its coach did. Eisa Tiaa Tou Tou, who guided the Grizzlies to the state semifinals in his seventh year, was named co-coach of the year. "I was surprised, absolutely surprised," said Tiaa Tou Tou, who shared the honor with Paul Slover of state-champion Lakeridge. "When (athletic director Karl Kemper) called me and told me, I said, ‘Are you sure?’" Tiaa Tou Tou wasn’t the only Grizzly honored. Advertisement Senior forward Fabian Garcia-Flores, the Southern Oregon Conference player of the year, was one of seven area players to be named to a first team as boys and girls all-star units for each classification were announced. The Phoenix boys placed forward Jaime Escobedo and defender Nathan Bursk, both seniors, on the top unit in Class 3A, and senior goalkeeper Jaclyn Unruh represented the Pirate girls in Class 3A/2A/1A voting. Bailey Southern, a sophomore midfielder for Hidden Valley, was one of five underclassmen on the Class 3A/2A/1A first team. St. Mary’s, which followed up a state-championship campaign last year with a semifinal appearance this time around, placed two seniors, forward Duncan MacDiarmid and defender Matt Bladek, on the Class 2A/1A boys first team. Ashland advanced to the state semifinals, where it lost a home game to Jesuit, 2-1. It finished the season with a 15-4 record. "The kids worked hard and were determined from the get-go," said Tiaa Tou Tou, the conference coach of the year as well. "I sat down with the coaches to determine if we were doing everything right in selecting the team and giving everybody their fair share. A lot of people got involved, not just the head coach." He’s pleased that the SOC has made a name for itself, not only with all-state accolades this season, but he cited the state championship won by South Medford in 2003. Garcia-Flores, who led the Grizzlies to back-to-back SOC crowns, scored 20 goals and had 10 assists during the SOC campaign. He also tallied the Grizzlies’ goal in the semifinals. Escobedo was player of the year in the Skyline Conference after having switched from midfielder to forward. He had 26 goals and 11 assists in leading the Pirates to the state semifinals. Bursk certainly did his part as Phoenix went 15-2. A defender, he also managed to score seven goals and assist on nine others. Unruh was the unanimous District 6 player of the year, and Southern was a unanimous first-team district pick. Unruh holds every season and career goalkeeper record at Phoenix and led the league in shutouts and goals-against average in 2004. Southern spearheaded a young Hidden Valley team that made the state playoffs. MacDiarmid, a defender last season, scored 30 goals and was named District 3 player of the year. He matched a national record with five straight hat tricks early in the season. Bladek, a four-year starter, anchored the league’s top defense. Sophomore defender Tamara Heryford of Phoenix and junior midfielder Austin Grant of St. Mary’s were second-team selections. Third-team choices were Ashland senior midfielder Corey Costantino, South Medford senior goalkeeper Bethany Stousland and Phoenix junior forward Marci Klimek.
