Eight SWAT teams compete Mail Tribune photos / Roy Musitelli Above: Clackamas County SWAT team members Frank Schoenfeld (foreground) and Tony Kollias on Thursday crawl across a rope that is part of a mile-long obstacle course set up for eight teams participating in a police SWAT training course at the Expo. SWAT teams from three states are vying for the top spot in a competition put on by Medford police. Groups from California, Idaho and Oregon ran, jumped, crawled and struggled through a one-mile course Thursday at the Jackson County Expo ponds near Central Point. After heaving themselves over a 12-foot wall and threading their way hand-over-hand across a rope, each seven-member team had to pick up a 500-pound log and carry it 150 feet. Today SWAT members will navigate a Marine Corps-style course laden with nets, ropes and other obstacles near the county sports park. With their heart rates elevated, officers on the move will shoot targets. Snipers will add points to each team's score in a sharp-shooting event at the law enforcement shooting range. Medford Police Department's SWAT team, which coordinated the two-day training conference, isn't competing. Lt. Tim George said the team tested the obstacles and scenario-based events, including a high-risk entry, assault on a vehicle, rescuing an officer and responding to an "active shooter." The three top teams will receive medals today , and the most physically fit team will take home a trophy. Each team paid $100 to compete.
