Marshall leads South to romp REDMOND - It took South Medford quarterback Boomer Marshall a few summer months to convince Ryan Heil to come out for the Panthers' football team. It's taken two weeks for Heil, an all-conference basketball player at South, to show that Marshall knows a thing or two about scouting. Coming off a game where he caught three passes for 48 yards and a touchdown, Heil went off the charts Friday night as the Panthers rolled past Redmond, 44-2, in non-conference action. South improved to 2-0 overall and will play host to Ashland next Friday at Spiegelberg Stadium in the Southern Oregon Conference opener for both teams. A senior who hadn't played football since his freshman year, Heil made up for lost time against Redmond (1-1) by hauling in four of Marshall's five TD passes. Heil opened the scoring with a 67-yard hookup from Marshall. Following a safety when South snapped the ball out of the end zone, Marshall added a 1-yard TD plunge before taking to the air again for a 14-yard score with Heil. Ryan Benson capped a run of 21 straight points by the Panthers with a 15-yard touchdown reception that gave South a 27-2 lead at halftime. Heil and Marshall picked up where they left off in the third quarter with touchdowns of 22 and 35 yards. Bryson Healy capped the scoring with a 19-yard field goal. CROOK COUNTY 31, CRATER 13 - At Prineville, Jamie Swindle scored on three touchdown runs to lead Crook County in the non-conference game as the Cowboys improved to 2-0 and the Comets fell to 0-2. Swindle had scoring runs of 19, 14 and 10 yards. His first score gave Crook County the lead through the first quarter, then Crater got on the board early in the second. The Comets' scored with 8:50 showing in the period when Trevor Ryan hauled in a 1-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Beatty. Ryan's extra-point kick was blocked. The Cowboys scored the next 24 points before Crater tallied again with only 21 seconds left, Cody Ponder catching a 5-yard pass from Nick Rose. GRESHAM 27, ASHLAND 20 - At Gresham, two unconventional plays and the hard running of Matt DeBois propelled the Gophers in the non-conference game. Ashland (1-1) was victimized in the first quarter by a double-reverse pass that went from Lance Deal to Ty Fogarty and covered 10 yards. The Gophers' final touchdown came following an onside kick - Gresham's third straight and the only successful one - with more than nine minutes left in the game. It set up a 6-yard touchdown run by Scott Gallagher. In between, DeBois, who rushed for 191 yards on 23 carries, had 34- and 71-yard scoring scampers. Ashland's touchdowns came on long passes by quarterback Cameron Voget. He connected with Nick Palmesano for 55 yards and Ryan Decker for 7 yards as the Grizzlies built a 14-6 lead in the third quarter. In the fourth, Ashland went ahead 20-13 on a 54-yard strike to Eddie Griffin. Voget was 13-of-24 for 177 yards and was intercepted once. ROSEBURG 22, SHELDON 21 , suspended game - At Eugene, the top-10 showdown between the Indians and Irish was suspended at the start of the fourth quarter because of a severe lightning storm. No. 7 Roseburg rallied from a 14-0, first-quarter deficit to forge the lead through three quarters against No. 2 Sheldon. Indians senior tailback Rod Cope paced a rushing attack that amassed 154 yards on 23 carries. Cope went 14 times for 81 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown that pulled Roseburg within 14-10 in the second. Back-up quarterback Asa Yraguen, a senior, gave the Indians the lead with a 16-yard TD jaunt in the third quarter. Highly-regarded junior quarterback Alex Brink directed the Irish to 160 yards through the air and tossed touchdown passes of 7 and 6 yards. Whether the fourth quarter will be made up has not been decided. GRANTS PASS 30, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0 - At Grants Pass, quarterback Tom Cohen passed for three touchdowns to three different receivers in the non-conference game at Mel Ingram Field. Cohen was 12-of-15 passing for 173 yards. Grants Pass took a 14-0 first-quarter lead on a 14-yard TD pass from Cohen to Derrick Draper and a 16-yard scoring run by Speedy Ortiz. Cohen connected on a 33-yard touchdown pass to Tyler York with 6:24 left before halftime, and the Cavemen went into halftime with a 21-0 lead. Brian Alves hauled in Cohen's final TD pass on a 15-yard third-quarter reception. Bruce Voges completed the scoring on a 31-yard field goal with 7:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. Grants Pass compiled 370 yards in offense, while the Cougars were held to 69 on the ground and 78 passing. Junior running back A.J. Schmitke paced the Cavemen rushing game with 89 yards on 13 carries. KLAMATH UNION 49, SUMMIT 2 - At Bend, Jeff Mortenson passed for four touchdowns and ran for another as Klamath Union crushed first-year school Summit. All four Mortenson touchdown passes came in the first quarter as the Pelicans jumped out to a 27-0 lead. Brad Mejia caught Mortenson's first two TD passes of 23 and 6 yards. Mortenson also found Jeff Pisan for a 40-yard TD and Jarod Leeper on a 28-yard aerial to complete the first-quarter blitz. Mortenson scored on a 15-yard second-quarter run as KU took a 34-0 lead at halftime. Donny Skelton opened KU's second-half scoring on a 40-yard run, then Mejia caught his third touchdown pass of the game on a 42-yard pass from Angelo Dearborn in the third quarter.
