Monarchs rout Renegades May 20, 2012 12:00 AM A A HILLSBORO — The Portland Monarchs minor league adult football team defeated the Southern Oregon Renegades 56-21 at Hare Field on Saturday. Southern Oregon quarterback Anthony Gonzalez threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Matt Cornish to trim the Monarchs' lead to 14-7 in the first quarter. Defensive back John Jones had a 25-yard interception return on the Monarchs' first play of the ensuing possession to even the score at 14. Alvin Thornton's 1-yard touchdown run cut the Renegades' deficit to seven points in the second period, leaving Portland with a 28-21 lead at halftime. The Monarchs owned a 35-21 advantage after the third quarter and held Southern Oregon (2-2) scoreless in the fourth quarter.
