Since You Asked: Car seat technicians are at Medford Station 6 once a month Friday Dec 23, 2016 at 12:01 AM I need some help installing a car seat and was told by a friend that there’s only one station in town where they’ll assist with that. Can you tell me which one that is? — Sara M., Medford Yes, we can. It’s Fire Station 6, and you’ll need to set up an appointment. Medford Fire-Rescue has two employees with car seat technician credentials — Samantha Metheny, the deputy fire marshal and public educator, and Bill Parks, a firefighter and paramedic. Metheny and Parks are available by appointment on the second Thursday of each month at Station 6, 3700 East Barnett Road, Medford, to show you how to install the seat correctly and make sure it's the right seat for your child. Metheny said the car seat should be secured so that it moves less than an inch from side to side, and the straps should be snug on the child so “that you can barely pinch the strap.” “We like to discourage folks from dropping by the fire stations because, A, there’s not always someone there and, B, not all firefighters are car seat technicians,” Metheny said. To become a car seat technician, a firefighter must take a 32-hour class, earn the necessary continuing education credits and renew their certification every two years. “It’s not a job a requirement, so they don’t all have the training,” Metheny said.
