http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend July 3, 2006 Police standoff ends in suicide By Paris Achen Mail Tribune A 20-minute standoff Sunday at Tiller-Trail Highway 227 ended in the suicide of a Rogue River man suspected of trying to murder his wife. The 54-year-old man, whose name was withheld, of the 2000 block of Pine Grove Road, died Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his motor home. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department had been trying to locate the man for pending probable cause charges for the attempted murder, assault and menacing of his wife, said Sheriff Mike Winters. The pending charges stemmed from an incident two weeks ago at the couple's home in which he allegedly assaulted his wife, attempted to strangle her and shot two rounds at her. A Shady Cove police officer noticed a vehicle Sunday traveling on Highway 227 that matched the description of his motor home and initiated a traffic stop at Milepost 1 about a mile north of the Crater Lake Highway 62 junction. When the officer approached the motor home, the man exited the driver's door with a shotgun. The officer took cover behind his police car until deputies from the sheriff's department arrived minutes later. A sheriff's department SWAT team and negotiators were en route to the scene when the man returned to the driver's seat and killed himself with a twelve-gauge shotgun shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday.
