The office is the lone pediatrics clinic directly serving the outlying areas of Shady Cove, Prospect and Butte Falls. It has a patient file of nearly 1,200 and sees 55 to 60 children each week, said nurse practitioner Lori Conners. "We expect to see a lot of growth here, because there are a lot of young families moving out to this area," Conners said. Providence Health & Services took over administration of the pediatrics office, now known as PMG-Eagle Point Pediatrics, Aug. 24. The same day, Providence Medford Medical Center opened an outpatient lab and X-ray office next door to the Providence Medical Group-Eagle Point primary care office at 1332 Shasta Ave.. Providence has operated a primary care services office there since 2009. Conners said in addition to the usual summer onslaught of rashes, skin issues and ear, nose and throat issues, smoke from the region's wildfires has produced a steady string of patients. "Where Eagle Point sits, the smoke was pretty awful," Conners said. "We've been treating many sinus infections because of it. Upper respiratory infections have been aggravated, and we've asthma-related issues, as well." Providence spokesperson Hillary Brown said all lab work, such as blood draws and X-ray services, are available to any patient with a lab order, whether they received that order from a Providence facility or another caregiver. "Eagle Point is a relatively small community, so these are pretty big business moves for the area," Brown said. Conners, who earned a master's degree from Texas Women's University in Dallas, heads up a four-person staff, including registered nurse Shirley Taylor and two medical assistants. The pediatric center handles well-baby, well-child visits, health maintenance and sick-child visits. The clinic serves children age 2 through 18. Pediatrician Greg Gonzalez ran the practice for more than a decade. The clinic moved to its present location in 2008. Gonzalez is returning to Colorado, where his children and grandchildren live. Prior to moving to Eagle Point, he was an emergency room physician at Children’s Hospital in Denver and later had a pediatric practice in the Denver area. Conners said Providence is seeking a pediatrician to join the Eagle Point staff. Reach reporter Greg Stiles at 541-776-4463 or [email protected] .
