Henley�s late surge dooms Phoenix boys PHOENIX � Phoenix kept itself in striking distance entering the final quarter, but Henley surged for a 69-43 victory in Skyline Conference boys basketball Tuesday. Henley led just 46-36 to begin the fourth quarter, then outscored the Pirates 23-7 in the period. "Their overall team athleticism wore us down as the game went on," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said. "We got hurt by the quickness of their press, which caused a lot of turnovers and led to some easy baskets." Henley�s 6-foot-4 forward Jess Smith burned the Pirates� zone for a game-high 23 points. "He�s the one with the hot hand and was the beneficiary of steals off the press," said Murphy. Phoenix (7-5, 1-1 Skyline) got a strong performance from senior center Mike Duffel, who had nine points and six rebounds. "Mike played real well before fouling out," said Murphy. "He was the one kid that matched Henley�s intensity and gave us a good defensive effort." Kevin Jeffers also grabbed six rebounds for the Pirates. Brandon Henry added 10 points and 17 rebounds for the Cougars (10-2, 2-0 Skyline) who won their fourth straight. Dan Houston added 15 points and Justin Graven also had 10 points for the winners. Riddle coach Dave Geddes called three straight timeouts in an attempt to fluster Caplan, but he calmly converted his only two free throws of the game. Chris Murphy scored 13 points and Michael Fiddler added 11 to lead the Crusaders, who upped their season record to 9-3. A.J. Duckett netted a game-high 19 points for the host Irish (5-6). ST. Stephenson also came up with six of the Loggers� 19 steals. The Loggers� 22-11 explosion in the second period gave them a 35-19 halftime lead. Butte Falls junior Nick Rodgers led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as did sophomore Jed Rowden. Zach Gordon led Prospect (5-7, 1-2 Sky A) with 12 points.
